After a lifetime spent teaching English as a foreign language to people of all ages and from all walks of life, writing textbooks and graded readers, and researching hundreds of lessons to meet the needs and interests of my students, I have finally found the time to devote myself fully to a research project I began many years ago.
It all started with a re-reading of 'The Merchant of Venice'. I found myself intrigued by the many references to places that could still be traced in and around that city today. How did the author come to know Venice with such unusual familiarity? What lay behind this intimate knowledge? These questions led me down a fascinating trail, one that ultimately brought me to answers that I will be sharing with you as this ongoing investigation unfolds.
